All Pilates reformer classes at this week will bring special focus on the movement of rotation—a twisting movement of the spine around its central, longitudinal axis. Rotation, when properly performed, is a helpful movement for balancing any asymmetry in the spine (such as scoliosis), maintains the health of the discs in between the vertebrae, and produces a “squeeze and soak” action of the digestive organs that helps the body to cleanse toxins (think of wringing out an old dishcloth–the dirty water is squeezed out and the cloth is refreshed). My version of this recipe was something more like this: put all the tomatoes I had in a roasting pan, covered them with lots of olive oil, any italian herbs I had (both dried and fresh – I never measure herbs, I just add them in until I’m happy), onions and garlic. … I roasted the tomatoes for 2 1/2 hours (smells amazing).
